Why You Keep Gaining Weight (And How To Stop)

Are you frustrated with those stubborn extra pounds that just won’t seem to budge? You’re not alone! Weight gain can be influenced by many different factors, including overeating, lack of physical activity, hormonal imbalances, stress, poor sleep, and medication side effects. Our modern lifestyle, including sedentary habits, processed foods, and environmental factors, also plays a big role in weight gain.

Common problems leading to weight gain include:

  1. Overeating and Portion Sizes: How much are you supposed to eat each meal? Should you avoid carbs and eat bigger portions of protein?
  2. Sedentary Lifestyle: Sitting for a long time and not moving much is such a common issue in our modern world.
  3. Stress and Emotional Eating: Stress and emotions can trigger overeating. It feels like a strong drive to eat a snack, even after you’ve JUST finished a meal. Or you get a sudden urge to eat something sweet when you know you’re not actually hungry.
  4. Sleep Deprivation: Inadequate sleep can disrupt hormones related to appetite and metabolism, contributing to weight gain.

How to stop gaining weight:

  1. Mindful Eating: Pay attention to your body’s hunger and fullness cues, practice portion control, and choose whole, nutrient-dense foods to support healthy eating habits.
  2. Regular Physical Activity: Incorporate regular exercise into your daily routine to support overall health and weight management.
  3. Stress Management: Stop holding onto bad feelings for long periods of time and using food to feel better. Seek connection with yourself to curb your cravings.
  4. Prioritizing Sleep: Establish a consistent sleep schedule, create a relaxing bedtime routine, and prioritize sleep hygiene practices to improve sleep quality.
  5. Seeking Help: Meet with a Dietitian and other healthcare professionals to help you find your blindspots and create a plan to move forward. This will help you reach your goals fastest.

Gaining weight can be a frustrating experience, but it’s essential to understand the underlying factors contributing to weight gain and take proactive steps to address them. By adopting healthy lifestyle habits such as mindful eating, regular physical activity, stress management, prioritizing sleep, and seeking professional help.
